Once the Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 is been nuked and cracked with TimerNuke, Windows will stop asking user to activate. The activation status and product ID becomes not available or unknown. Hence, the Windows may run forever without activation permanently. TimerNuke version 1.0.5.0 supports both 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) editions of Windows Server 2008 and Windows 7. It supports at least up to Windows 7 Beta build 7000.
However, it likely supports to crack the final RTM release of Windows 7 if the product activation module in the OS is not significantly changed.
Windows 7 Beta 1 (build 7000) is now available for free download. However, Microsoft has not yet officially launch the beta program or customer preview program for general public yet, so there is no activation product key available yet. pembros, a hacker who developed the popular TimerLock activation crack for Windows Vista, has compiled an executable, TimerNuke, that run a batch command script to disable the activation process in Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. TimerNuke, also known as Windows 7 & 2008 Activation Disabler, actually does not stop the activation grace period countdown clock. Instead, it disables and removes several several services and files related to software licensing in order to bypass and skip the activation requirement.
What TimerNuke does is that when executed, it stops and changes the startup type of sppsvc (Software Protection), sppuinotify (SPP Notification Service) and SLUINotify (SL UI Notification Service) services to disable. Then, the TimerNuke simply takes ownership and full control permissions on the following files, before backing them up and finally deleting them away.

Remove Watermark For Windows Vista / Windows 7

Many users are asking how to remove evaluation copy (Or testing purpose only) watermark that appears on the bottom right of Windows 7 desktop. Generally, we need to edit system file to make it happen. But thankfully, we have a simple, clean and working patch that does the job perfectly.

Before getting into the innards of the guide, it’s better to backup your system files since you are going edit user32.dll.mui system file using a small patch. Follow the steps given below to remove watermark from the Windows 7 desktop.

Procedure:

1. Download the patch from here (Thanks to deepxw for creating the patch).

2. Right-click on Removewatermark (.exe) file and select Run as administrator. Make sure that you have chosen RemovewatermarkX86.exe file, if you are using 32-bit Windows. Likewise choose RemovewatermarkX64.exe for 64-bit Windows.

3. Next, a command prompt will be opened asking your permission to continue. Press/type “Y” to continue patching process.

4. Within few seconds, a successful message will be shown. Close Command Prompt window & reboot your system.

5. Enjoy!

If the watermark appears even after rebooting the machine, then follow the procedure below.

1. Type CMD in Start menu search field and hit enter Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open Command Prompt with admin rights. Alternatively, go to Start > All programs > Accessories. Right-click on Command Prompt entry, and select Run as administrator.

2. In the Command Prompt, type in mcbuilder.exe and hit enter. It may take a minute to finish the process. Now, close the Command Prompt window and reboot Windows 7.

3. You should see no watermark on your desktop now.

Note that this patch should work fine on all builds of Windows 7 including build 7057.

Disable Last Access - Include your last access to the files (default off). We need to see the last of the file
Dr. Watson Disable - Disable embedded debugger Dr.Watson. Free system resources, slightly speeding up the operation system.
IRQ8 Priority - Increase the priority of interrupts IRQ8 (increases the speed of the system).
Large System Cache - Optimize (increase) the system cache. Include, if more than 1GB of memory!
Paging Executive - Leave the system kernel in memory (not released in the swap file, the default is off). Catalytic system, reduces the number of disk accesses.
Hiber off - turn off hibernation, thus osvabozhdaet on the hard drive up to 2 GB.
UAC off - disable the UAC (Control Accounts) without having to reboot.
No Report - Do not send to Microsoft error reports.

LAN:

Up and Download - Accelerate Download and Upload. Accelerates the network and the Internet (especially on high-speed connections).
Disable IPv6 - Disable protocol IPv6. It can speed up the network and the Internet.
DisableTeredo - Disable proxy Teredo. It can speed up the network and the Internet.
Half-open limit fix - is to change the maximum number of concurrent half-joints in the system file tcpip.sys.

Other:

Disable DEP - DEP feature is disabled for the entire system, regardless of the hardware support for DEP. It can prevent the flight to BSOD (blue screen of death). Suitable for XP, Vista, Win-7.
Super Hidden - Show hidden files.
Fix for game - the game allows you to be SP1, SP2 or SP3.
Become owner * - allows you to become the owner and ask the full access to the object.

The next version of Windows called as Windows 7 which is expected to be launched as soon as the fall of 2009, has some major changes. You can just extract the files from the rar archive and double click on calc.exe to start using it or, you can replace your existing calculator of Windows Vista with this one. Just follow the steps below:

copy calc.exe to C:\Windows\System32\
copy calc.exe.mui (in en-US folder) to C:\Windows\System32\en-US\

Beacuse you’ll be overwriting the existing calculator files of Vista, it’s a good idea that you take a back of the files which will be overwritten.

Windows 7 includes device driver support for the latest processor power-management technologies from leading independent hardware vendors. Windows 7 comes with build in power plans, but you can create your own plan if you do not want to alter the default settings.

To create a new power plan, open the Power Options in the Control panel (All Control Panel Items-> Power Options or you can type power options in the start menu search). In the power Options, click on Create a Power Plan in the left sidebar.

Click on the next button and enter the power settings you would like to have in this plan. You need to choose the sleep and display settings.

Once you have done with the customizations, click the create button and the power plan is created. You can also change the advanced power options for this plan.

Microsoft has made available the Windows 7 RC and is now available for public download from Microsoft servers. You can now try the Windows 7 pre-release software and you can see the changes and fixes from the Beta testing. Unlike the beta version, the Release candidate will be available till July 2009 and there is no limit to the product keys, so you have enough time to download the RC.

Some things to know about the RC:

This is pre-release software, so please read the following to get an idea of the risks and key things you need to know before you try the RC.

The RC will be available at least through July 2009 and we’re not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time.
The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010.
Be sure to back up your data and please don’t test the RC on your primary home or business PC.
Before installing the RC, please read the Release Notes and Things to Know for important information about the release.
Be sure to turn on automatic updates in Windows Update in case we publish updates for the RC.
You can install the Windows 7 RC on a PC running Windows Vista without backing up the PC—but we encourage you to make a backup for safe keeping. Microsoft will be releasing the Windows 7 RC on May 5th 2009 for the general public and we have confirmed reports that the final version might be coming in October, earlier than expected. Meanwhile Microsoft has released the minimum system requirements to run a Windows 7 PC. Windows 7 requires less system specification especially the memory when compared to Windows Vista. So here are the system requirements for Windows 7. The specification for Windows 7 are lesser compared to the specs released when Vista was made available.

* 1GHz 32-bit or 64-bit processor
* 1GB of RAM
* 16GB of disk space (or 20GB for 64-bit users)
* DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver

If you want to run the Window XP mode in Windows 7, Microsoft recommends a PC with a minimum of 2GB of memory and 15 GB of additional disk space. In addition, Windows Virtual PC requires a PC with Intel-VT or AMD-V enabled in the CPU, as it takes advantage of the latest advancements in hardware virtualization.

How to Upgrade from Windows 7 Beta to RC Build?

Now that the RC build is official from Microsoft, users can start downloading the latest RC build 7100 and install it. Microsoft recommends user to do a fresh install even if you have installed the beta version of Windows 7 released in Jan 2009. But it is also possible to upgrade from beta build to RC build using a simple hack. If you want to upgrade from beta to RC, you will need to bypass the check for pre-release as mentioned in the Windows 7 blog.

Steps to upgrade from Beta to RC;

Download the ISO and burn the ISO to a DVD.
Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
Browse to the sources directory.
Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. You need to change the value to 7000 as it is the beta version build number.
Save the file in place with the same name.
Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

With this change, you can upgrade from the beta version to the RC build.

Windows 7 Coming in October?

Windows 7 RC is just out for MSDN and TechNet users and we have fresh rumors that Windows 7 final release will be coming in October 2009. Acer has confirmed that it will be shipping the new all-in-one Z5600 PC preloaded with Windows 7 on October 23, 2009. This is much earlier than the expected date of Jan 2010 from Microsoft, 3 years after the public release of Windows Vista.

Acer also confirmed that any Vista-based models purchased in the 30 days prior to this date will be eligible for Microsoft’s free upgrade program. Acer Z5600 is a touch screen PC specifically made for Windows 7 and features 24’ LCD screen touch screen, built-in TV tuner card, Blu-ray recorder, a 2 TB hard drive. Aspire Z5600 can be used like a general mouse and keyboard PC.

There is no official word from Microsoft on the release date of Window 7 yet. Meanwhile the RC of Windows 7 would be available for download on May 5th.

Enable BitLocker Drive Encryption in Windows 7

View Window Titles in Windows 7

In Windows XP, whenever we open any explorer window, the title of the window would be the folder opened. But in Vista this title bar was blank and so is the case with Windows 7. In Windows 7 as well, the explorer does not show any title. A simple application called Aerobar can show titles in the explorer window. This application which was designed for Vista, also works with Windows 7 and does not require any installation and when running, it shows the titles in Explorer.

Once you have downloaded the application, you can add it to Windows 7 startup menu. The startup folder is located at C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, where C is the drive where Windows 7 is installed.

In case you do not want this application, you can remove from the task manager and also from the startup folder.

Removing this process will make explorer titles blank. Please note that you need to restart the machine after starting this application to show titles.

Enable or Disable System Restore in Windows 7

When Windows Vista was launched, User Account Control (UAC) was introduced and many users found this security feature annoying. Although there were many ways to disable UAC in Windows Vista including third party applications, there was very little options to customize UAC. In Windows 7, UAC has been designed based on the feedback received on Vista UAC. There are more options in Windows 7 UAC compared to Vista.

To access UAC in Windows 7, type UAC in the Start menu search bar or you can even navigate from Control Panel-> Action center-> UAC

The UAC in Windows 7 has four options and second option is set by default which notifies you only when program tries to modify computer. You can enable notification for all changes or disable notification.

Another interesting thing about Windows UAC is that there is an option called “Notify me when program tries to make changes to the computer (do not dim desktop)”. Dimming of the desktop was one of the annoying things in Vista UAC and this problem has been rectified in Windows 7 UAC.

Overall the Windows 7 UAC is very much improved when compared to Vista.

Minimize Windows Live Messenger to System Tray in Windows 7

Enable Run Command in Start Menu in Windows 7

When you install the Windows 7 beta version, you can see some changes in the start menu when compared to Windows Vista. Similar to Vista, the Run command is not available by default in Windows 7. Remove the Send Feedback Link in Windows 7

Windows 7 Beta version was made public few days back by Microsoft for testing purpose. Since this build is for testing purpose, Microsoft has included a link to send feedback in all Windows and programs. This can be sometimes annoying as this link sits near the Windows maximize and minimize buttons. This can be removed using a simple registry hack.

NB: Please take a back up of registry before making any changes.

1. Click on the start menu and Click Run-> regedit.
2. This opens the registry editor. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. Here you can see an entry by name FeedbackToolEnabled.
3. Double click on the DWORD value and make it to 0 from the current value.
4. Close the editor and log off Windows to take the effect.

Next time you log into Windows 7, you will not see the Send Feedback link.

Remove Watermark For Windows Vista / Windows 7 (32 bit/64 bit)

Procedure:

1. Download the patch from here (Thanks to deepxw for creating the patch).

3. Next, a command prompt will be opened asking your permission to continue. Press/type “Y” to continue patching process.

4. Within few seconds, a successful message will be shown. Close Command Prompt window & reboot your system.

5. Enjoy!

If the watermark appears even after rebooting the machine, then follow the procedure below.

2. In the Command Prompt, type in mcbuilder.exe and hit enter. It may take a minute to finish the process. Now, close the Command Prompt window and reboot Windows 7.

3. You should see no watermark on your desktop now.

Note that this patch should work fine on all builds of Windows 7 including build 7057.

Changelog:
A source informed me that only bugs were fixed since build RC escrow (7077) which is expected.

Is this build fake?
Some users opened up cversion.inf to find that it differed from the one that Microsoft showed on their blog. I have confirmed with a source that the MinClient value is set at 7077 by default.

5 Features Missing in Windows 7

With the release of the Windows 7 Beta, the PC community has been abuzz with excitement for some of the new features. But, some users have been left disappointed at the failure of Microsoft to fix some nasty gaps in the Windows operating system. Here is a list of the top ten features and fixes not seen in Windows 7, as of February 23, 2009.

1. An all-inclusive, easy-to-use, organized Control Panel.

Many Windows Vista users were left unhappy when Microsoft changed the Control Panel from XP. And thus far, Microsoft has yet to prefect the Control Panel. As of now, the control panel remains messy, excessive, and confusing.

The control panel as it stands right now is so messy that if you opened all of the options windows, it’d look something like this:

One Windows 7 user, David, explains his concept of how the Windows 7 Control Panel should look and work.

David’s proposed guidelines for the Control Panel:

1. The user should never be more than 1 (one) level deep within the Control Panel. Once a user has selected a category, there should be no further links or windows which must be opened, with the exception or file browser dialogues and setup/configuration wizards.
2. All options within a category should be tabbed or listed in the left side panel as displayed in these concept images. If the category contains only one set of options, the side panel should be collapsed, showing nothing more than the Help icon and the Control Panel Home icon.
3. There should be no mention of related items or tasks. For example, the Screen Saver properties should NOT display a reference link to the system power options. This is one of the largest reasons users get lost in the Control Panel.
4. Any settings that when changed may cause adverse affects to the system’s performance, security and overall well being should be labeled as “Advanced” and hidden from the default view of the Control Panel. If a user wishes to see these advanced options, the user may check a selection box to display them at their own will.
5. All third party control panel items, such as the NVIDIA Control Panel, should be segregated in an “Additional Settings” category and should be marked as “Advanced”.
6. The “Help” link should always remain in the exact same position throughout the entire Control Panel. The user shouldn’t need help finding help.

2. Fix the move, copy, delete functions.

One of the most ridiculous Windows problems out there is the copying, moving, and deleting problem in Windows Explorer. If a bug or error occurs, your file transfer may be cancelled and completely reverted. This is extremely annoying for big file transfers. In addition, the transfer process is unneccesarily lengthy and slow.

If you want a fix for this problem, you might want to grab a download of TeraCopy.

3. Replace the Windows Basic theme.

When a user doesn’t have aero enabled, they are stuck with one of the worst theme designs ever from Microsoft: Windows Basic. 4. Update all of the old Windows icons, menus, and screens.

Although Microsoft changed there style to reflect the updated times, there are still hidden, outdated icons, menus, and screens within Windows 7. These need to be updated to reflect the current style.

5. Make the text in errors copyable.

When you get an error in Windows, the best way to find the solution is often through Google. Microsoft absolutely needs to make their errors copyable so that users can easily find answers to their problems online.

Error codes should be copyable to allow for easy Googling.

If Microsoft decided to take our advice and change these things, Windows 7 would see a lot more satisfaction from its users.

Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows 7, is not even released as of yet, but it is already receiving a great deal of praise from beta testers and tech journalists. Microsoft has tried to remain open about its development of the new operating system through the Windows 7 Team Blog, through social bookmarking sites like Twitter, and through the Engineering Windows 7 blog.

In that spirit of openness, Microsoft released some of the Windows 7 concepts that were abandoned at the MIX conference in Las Vegas. TechRadar shows off the designs here.

Build 7070 Screenshots

Only days after the leak of build 7068 on torrent websites, screenshots of build 7070 have appeared. 7070 has the string 6.1.7070.0.winmain.090324-1853 and was compiled on March 24, 2009 at 6:53 PM. The screenshots were leaked at Facepunch forums.

According to the leaker’s post:

“I just came back from Microsoft, since my Dad works there. He works for in the SQL server division and here are some screenshots I took about the new build 7070.I don’t know if there is anything new to this build, but they installed it yesterday, so it probably will be leaked soon. They said it was a major update; maybe not to the user interface but more to the Kernel. Just letting you guys know :P”

Rumor has it the same man who leaked the build 7068 screenshots has now leaked the official highest build on the download market. Build 7068 is now available in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions on torrent websites. The build string is 7068.winmain.090321-1322. It was compiled on March 21, 2009 at 1:22 PM.

Paul Thurott, famous Windows enthusiast, made an interesting discovery in his installation of build 7068 on his blog. This build is the first to list all of the install options: Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate. This is because the 7068 version is mainly for OEMs and testing.

A Japanese blog (translated version) has released the first pictures of build 7068 or 7068.winmain.090321-1322. According to the screenshot, the build was compiled on March 21, 2009 at 1:22 PM. The pictures mostly highlight errors with some Windows 7 gadgets in the build. The blog also talks about the decreased performance with the aero interface enabled.

Tweak Your Windows 7: SetteMaxer

For those who aren’t used to playing around in their Registry Editor, the SetteMaxer tool is a good download. With the tool, users can tweak a number of settings in their Windows 7 Beta.

Logon Changer for Windows 7

Last week, Rafael Rivera Jr. made an important Windows 7 discovery regarding changeable login screen backgrounds in the operating system. We reported on how to change your login background in our post. While the login changing ability was found in the 7057 build on Windows 7, anyone running the operating system (build 7000+) should be able to change their login screen.

Now, Tweaks.com is making the task much simpler with an easy-to-use Logon Changer. The application is a lightweight utility that is extremely easy to use and lets the user avoid creating annoying registry values, renaming images, and dragging folders.

To use the program, simply run the application “TweaksLogon.exe” and begin. Click “Change Logon Screen” to select an image from your hard drive.

The Logon Changer will then provide an example of what your login screen may look like. You can press the “Test” button to move to your Switch User view. Don’t worry, this does not log you out of Windows.

Once you are satisfied with your login screen, simply exit the program and enjoy. Reverting back to the default login screen is as easy as clicking the “Revert to Default Logon Screen” button in Logon Changer.

86% of Enthusiasts Like Windows 7

Since the opening of Windows 7 Info (W7Info.com), users have taken part in voting on the Windows 7 Articles blog. The title of the poll is “Rate Windows 7″ with the options of rating it “5 - Amazing, 4 - Good, 3 - Okay, 2 - Bad, 1 - Poor.” I’d like to point out the results of the poll thus far as 351 enthusiasts have cast their votes on our blog.

We first published our results after January and 75% of Windows Enthusiasts liked Windows 7. Since then, the results have been even more favorable for the new operating system. An 86% approval rating is high praise indeed from a critical market of PC users who torched Windows Vista, Microsoft’s last OS release. And, the ratings seem to be gradually getting better… from 75% to 86% in a matter of a month and a half.

Windows 7 Release Candidate Update

Microsoft has updated its scheduling for the release of the Windows 7 Release Candidate. In the fourth week of April (19-25) of 2009, Microsoft plans to release internal RC-escrow builds (not the same as the public RC) to a smaller group of testers. Then, in the last week of May, Microsoft plans to make a public Release Candidate available.

In other news, the Microsoft Office 14 Beta is expecting a July release. A second beta version will be available in November. And then Office is planned to be released in early March of 2010.

One of the easily unnoticed new Windows 7 add-ons is the improved Backup and Restore feature. In Windows Vista, the Backup and Restore feature allowed users to backup an image to their hard disk or their DVD-drive. One could only backup files to a network location.

This leaves the user with a problem. For many, it does not make sense to backup to a hard drive in which the operating system is installed. They may want to reformat and then restore the backup. And, if they choose to back up to DVD’s… they might get stuck with having to use a billion DVD’s to fit the backup.

Allowing users to backup images to network locations, Windows 7 enables users to more easily use the backup and restore feature.

Also, as pointed out by ZDNet’s Ed Bott, in Windows 7, a new “Let me choose” option has been added to allow users to set up their own backup system.

Fix Gadgets Problem in Windows 7

If a Windows 7 user disables User Account Control, the built-in gadgets in Windows Explorer no longer work. To fix this problem, you can open up the Registry Editor. Open it up by pressing the start button and typing “regedit” into the search and pressing enter.

Navigate to the folder: “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Sidebar\Setting”

Create a new DWORD value called “AllowElevatedProcess” and set its value to “1″.

Fix Google Chrome in 64-Bit Windows 7

Many users who’ve installed the 64-bit version of the Windows 7 Beta build 7000 are experiencing difficulties with Google’s new browser: Chrome. Users with this problem will see a blank page instead of the default homepage on load. If the user attempts to visit a website, they will see an error message: “Aw, Snap! Something went wrong while displaying this webpage. To continue, press Reload or go to another page.” See the picture below.

Users who try to navigate to a website while running Google's Chrome on Windows 7 7000 64-Bit will see this "Aw, Snap!" error message.

To fix this problem:

Go to Start. Find “Google Chrome” in the Programs list.
Right click the Chrome icon labeled “Google Chrome” and go to Properties.
Modify the “Target” field in the Shortcut tab. Add the line: “--in-process-plugins” to the back of your address.

Get the Windows 7025 Quick Launch

Windows 7 Beta (7000) users can add the Quick Launch toolbar, as seen in the Build 7025 screenshots, to their taskbar by following these instructions.

Open up your Windows desktop
Right click the taskbar
Mouseover “Toolbars”
Click “New Toolbar…”
Copy: %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftInternet ExplorerQuick Launch into the “Folder” field
Select that folder
Now, dragging the Quick Launch bar can be a bit difficult. Make sure to unlock your taskbar (Right click on tasbar, click “Lock the taskbar” if it is locked). Instead of dragging the Quick Launch toolbar to the left of the pinned items, try dragging the pinned items bar (with the dotted lines to the left of the pinned items) to the right of the Quick Launch.
Before unlocking, you can right click it to modify the settings.

Disabling “Show Text” and “Show Title” will make it more like the XP, Vista classic Quick Launch bar.
Mousing over “View” and clicking “Large icons” will make the icons look more like the pinned icons.

Tweaking the “Send To” Menu in Windows 7

There is a whole range of hidden menus and shortcuts in Windows 7. One that may go unnoticed is the secret “right click” with “shift” technique that allows users to see a host of different menu options when right-clicking a file or folder.

So, here we have our normal right click menu:

But, if you press “SHIFT” before right-clicking, you see an extended right-click menu. This extended menu includes extra options: “Open in New Process” and extra Send To options.

But, if you press "SHIFT" before right clicking, you can see extra options.

Here, you can see quite a few extra Send To options have been unhidden with the SHIFT right-click.

And, if you want to customize your Send To menu, you can simply navigate to this in your location bar:

Then just create shortcuts to your desired locations.

Enable DreamScene in Windows 7

When Windows Vista was released a couple of years ago, one of the coolest new features was the ability to add videos as a desktop background. The feature, called DreamScene, was certainly a “dream” of many PC users who had been anticipating moving wallpapers for years. But, DreamScene in Windows Vista was more of a failure than a success. DreamScene never quite caught on as well as Microsoft had hoped.

Still, DreamScene captured the hearts of thousands of PC users. And those users will be saddened to know that Microsoft has stripped the feature from Vista’s predecessor, Windows 7. DreamScene has been replaced by the simpler Desktop Slideshow feature

But, no worries! The feature is easily addable in Windows 7 through a simple program that modifies your registry and copies over the necessary files to enable DreamScene.

To enable DreamScene in Windows 7, do the following:

Warning! To use DreamScene, you must have Windows Aero enabled.

Download Windows7-DreamScene.exe
Run “Windows7-DreamScene.exe” as “Administrator”

The installer will automatically copy the necessary files on to your computer and change your registry.
It will automatically install DreamScene and restart Explorer
DreamScene will be working immediately after the install.
Right-click any WMV or MPG video to set it as your DreamScene desktop background video.

Your wallpaper is now a working video!

Everything works the same as in Windows Vista, except for the Control Panel >> Personalize menu does not show the DreamScene videos as options in Windows 7.
DreamScene tips:

Smaller files work better, the smaller the video, the less lag time in the playback.
Right click your desktop to “Pause” or “Play” your DreamScene wallpaper video.
Try wallpaper videos with sound/audio.

Best Internet Browsers on Windows 7

Although roughly 44.8% of computer users are using various versions of Internet Explorer and 45.5% of computer users are using Mozilla Firefox, there is still a tense competition for the creation of the best internet browser. In this article, we will review some of the basics of the best internet browsers out there for your Windows 7 machine. We will grade browsers on a few different categories.

In this speed test, we determined the fastest browsers on Windows 7, based off of our average start up times, page load times, Javascript assessment times, and CSS benchmark times. The results are shown below and are to be taken with a grain of salt. Margins of error were relatively high for these tests. Update: I have included some more reliable tests from Lifehacker and CNET in the results.

Usability

Safari:

Safari 4 is a huge step up in usability from the rather disappointing Safari 3. The new “Top Sites” feature steals from Opera’s original use of the Speed Dial and Google’s perfection of the utility in Chrome. Although Safari does not include labels for the top sites like Chrome, Safari’s Top Sites feature is far better. The “Edit” button allows for customization of the sites, where they show up, and other options. You can choose how many sites you’ll see.

In addition, Safari’s new design allows for greater usability with more screenspace since the tabs are a part of the windows’s title bar like in Google Chrome. Smart move.

The new History with “Cover Flow” is a better way to look through your past files. Safari 4’s version of middle click was a stroke of pure genius. Apple’s implementation of built-in RSS is excellent.

Unfortunately, Safari fails to have an add-on/plugin system as good as Firefox’s. And, the address bar in Safari is so eight years ago. Firefox’s address bar is fifty times better and Chrome’s is twenty five times better.

Firefox:

Firefox is no match for Google Chrome’s ease of use. But, Firefox is highly customizable and has the best address bar of any browser out there. The Firefox address bar allows you to type “go wi” or something like that and navigate quickly to your Google News search for “Windows 7.” In addition, typing ‘Windows 7′ into the bar and pressing enter will automatically send you to the Windows 7 homepage on Microsoft.com. Brilliant. The address bar makes Firefox.

In addition, almost any feature on any browser can be added to Firefox with Firefox Add-Ons. The Firefox Add-Ons system is a comprehensive database of endless amounts of tweaks for your browser. Using the Speed Dial add-on, I effectively added Chrome/Opera/Safari’s top sites feature to Firefox. And using themes, I made Firefox look almost as good as Safari 4 and Chrome.

Internet Explorer 8:

Internet Explorer is still one of the harder browsers to use. The new “Web Slices” feature is difficult to understand for first timers and the Compatibility View is just plain terrible. Users do not wish to see a screwed up version of the Web and then click “Compatibility View” to make it right. Pretty sure the users are just looking for the web to be displayed correctly like it does in Firefox or Chrome.

The Accelerators feature isn’t a bad addition. It is nice to be able to right click and address and map it immediately. Although, I’m not really a fan of that popup blue icon that keeps spawning when you highlight something.

The address bar is pretty good. It beats Safari’s hands down.

Google Chrome:

Google Chrome is one of the most exciting new browsers out there. Its deployment of the “Omni-bar” instead of the address bar-search bar combo is a stroke of genius. Unfortunately, the omni-bar isn’t as smart as Firefox’s address bar. The top sites feature as the homepage is brilliant as well. Putting the tabs on the title bar allows for more screen real estate, and Google Chrome just looks good in Windows 7’s aero interface. Overall, a solid browser. The ability of each Google Chrome tab to run in a separate process also improves your chances of recovering from any sort of crash.

Appearance

Firefox:

Firefox isn’t one of the best looking browsers. The grey bars look is a little outdated. But, the fact that you can add-on themes in Firefox saves the day for the Mozilla browser. Adding the “Glasser” theme for Firefox in Windows 7 with the aero interface enabled makes Firefox look pretty good.

Google Chrome:

Google Chrome really revolutionized the way browsers look. Everything is very simple. It looks good. The light blue is maybe a poor choice, but the incorporation of the glass in the aero interface is spot on. The top sites feature adds some bling to the pages.

Safari:

Safari 4 is the best looking browser I have ever seen. It takes the Google Chrome simplicity to a new level and allows for a wonderful amount of screen real estate by placing the beautiful glass tabs at the top of the window. The “Create a new tab” button at the top right looks brilliant with the shadow of the tabs. In addition, the 3D top sites feature is extremely flashy and Cover Flow for your History is eye-catching as well as useful. I wish every browser looked this good.

Internet Explorer 8:

Internet Explorer 8 is not appealing. It does incorporate well into the glass of the aero interface, but that is about it. The tabs bar looks flat and the whole “light blue” thing is way out of style.

Overall

Overall, the best browser, in my opinion, for your Windows 7 machine is Mozilla Firefox. The incredible address bar surpasses any positive features of the other browsers. Add-ons and themes can get you all the things from Safari, Chrome, and IE anyways. Safari wins for appearance, Google Chrome for potential, and Firefox overall.

Windows 7 - Custom Login Backgrounds

Windows 7 will officially support the customization of backgrounds on the “Login” screen. The find was discovered by Rafael Rivera Jr. over at his blog. Rivera discovered the new feature in the 7057 build of Windows 7 that was released just last week for download on torrent websites.

Seven now supports the background customization without third party software, like Stardock, or hacks.

Rivera explains how to use the background customization:

First, a check is made to determine if the customization functionality is enabled or not. More precisely, a DWORD value named OEMBackground in the HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Authentication\LogonUI\Background key is checked. Its data, of Boolean type, defines whether or not this behavior is turned on, i.e. 1 for enabled, 0 for disabled. This value may not exist by default, depending on your system.

Afterwards, if customization is enabled, the primary monitor’s screen height and width are retrieved via calls to GetSystemMetrics. These values are used in the computation of the screen width (w)/height (h) ratio. For example, my desktop resolution is 1920 x 1200. The ratio, computed by the division of w/h, is 1.6:1.

The result of this computation is looked up in an internal table that drives what image to load on disk. Although I don’t have a large enough monitor to test, it appears resolutions higher than 1920 x 1200 will force the loading and zooming of an image of closest compatibility (i.e. same ratio, smaller image).

As this is an OEM feature images are derived from %windir%\system32\oobe\info\backgrounds. Like the registry value, this folder may not exist by default. The following files (sorted by width-to-height ratio) are supported in this folder:

The backgroundDefault.jpg image is loaded and stretched-to-fit when a resolution/ratio-specific background cannot be found. The other resolution/ratio-specific files are self-explanatory. If the background cannot be loaded (e.g. image physically too large, incorrect ratio, etc.), the default SKU-based image is loaded from imagesres.dll. You’ll see a Windows Server-themed grayish background in there, too, suggesting this functionality is not specific to client SKUs.

Unlock Hidden Themes in Windows 7

In addition to the handful of themes built in to Window 7, there are others which can be downloaded from the Windows 7 web site, and those created by independent third-party designers. But did you know that there are even more themes hidden within the OS itself? According to WinVistaClub, these hidden themes were meant for different regions like Australia, Canada, Great Britain, United States and South Africa. But thanks to their handy instructions, you can unlock these themes easily so you have more options with which to customize your Windows 7 desktop.

To unlock the hidden themes, do the following:

1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Click Organize, and select Folder and Search Options.
3. Go to View tab.
4. Select Show hidden files, folders and drivers and uncheck Hide protected operating system files (Recommended). If prompted with confirmation, click Yes.
5. Click OK.
6. Browse to the following folder:
\Windows\Globalization\MCT\
7. There are five folders in the name with format MCT-XX (where XX is AU, CA, GB, US, or ZA) which represents globalization settings for each region. Go into the folder that you want to activate its theme.
Note: AU, CA and ZA regions have the same themes.
8. Open the Theme folder inside the selected region folder.
9. Double click on the XX.theme file to apply the theme to the Windows 7 desktop system. Once a theme is ran and activated, the theme will be remembered and saved into Personalization options, so that user can change or select the theme again directly from Personalization settings screen.
10. Now to go to Folder Options to reverse the first 5 steps to hide the hidden and protected system files and folders again.

After unlocking, there will be more themes for available for customization.

Install Windows 7 Using a USB Stick

Specifically, you can use a USB stick to install the OS – a handy trick, especially for installing Windows 7 on a netbook, which don’t typically have optical drives. Windows 7 Secret “Send To” Menu

The How-to-Geek just stumbled across a hidden menu in the beta version of Windows 7: the expanded “Send To” menu. As you already know, when you right-click on any item, one of the options that displays is the “Send To” menu. In Windows 7, you can choose to send that item to a Compressed (Zipped) Folder, your Desktop (create shortcut), Fax or Mail Recipients, or to your CD/DVD drive. However, when you hold down the SHIFT key and right-click, a whole new menu appears with a lot more options.

The expanded menu includes all of your User folders like Contacts, Desktop, Downloads, Favorites, Links, My Documents, My Music, My Pictures, My Videos, Saved Games, and Searches.

Here’s an extra tip, too: to add any items to your regular “Send To” menu, type shell:sendto and then drag shortcuts to the folder which appears.

Auto-Login Your Windows 7 User Account

Although I don’t personally recommend this, there are some people out there who don’t want to bother with using a password to protect their Windows user account. Of course, using a password in Windows isn’t required, only suggested. But even if you don’t fill one in, you still have to click your user icon to start the login process.

An easier way - although again much less secure - is to enable auto-logins for your Windows PC. This is possible in Windows 7, as it was in prior versions, but it takes a little finagling to do so. (And for good reason, darn it.)

Still, if you must do this, here’s how:

Press the Windows key + R on your keyboard to launch the “Run” dialog box.
Type in control userpasswords2
Press Enter. The User Accounts window will display.
Uncheck the option “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer”
Click “OK”
You will then be prompted to enter the current password and confirm it.
After doing so, you will no longer be prompted to enter your password upon login.

Use this tip at your own risk!

How to Put Folders on Your Windows 7 Taskbar

In previous versions of Windows, some people dragged folders to their Quick Launch bar for easy access. Now that Quick Launch has been replaced by the Windows 7 taskbar, how can this be done? The answer is simple – use the “Links” toolbar instead. To pin multiple folders to the taskbar, you only need to right-click on the taskbar, open the Toolbars menu and check the “Links” entry. Then you can open a Windows Explorer window and drag the folder to the Links bar. Doing this adds a shortcut to that folder which you can easily access from the taskbar. Don’t forget, if you want to expand the Links toolbar and give it more room on the taskbar, you need to right-click and unlock the toolbar first in order to move it around. (By the way, this is an easy way to add the Recycle Bin to the Taskbar!)

Change Your Windows 7 Media Center Background

Did you know you can change your Media Center background? Neither did I until I read this recent post. Although not officially a part of the Media Center software, there is a way to do it. It’s not the easiest thing in the world as it involves applying a new registry file and editing permissions. But if those sorts of things are second nature to you, it’s definitely worth checking out the tutorial on this hack.

If you want to get even crazier, there’s also a guide available on making new, complete themes for Media Center using a software program called Restorator.

However, if all that sounds like way too much geeking out for you, then you can simply download and install this new Media Center theme called “Homeworld” from the Hacking Windows 7 Media Center blog. The download works on Windows 7 Beta1 Build 7000 – both x86 and x64 versions.

Desktop Gadgets for Windows 7

The folks at Redmond Pie have just posted about their five top “must-have” gadgets for Windows 7. Introduced in Vista, gadgets are mini applications built using XML, DHTML, and JavaScript. In Vista, though, those gadgets were more constrained to the sidebar. Although you could move them outside the sidebar to other parts of the screen, the bar itself would never really go away. In Windows 7, that has changed. The sidebar is no more and the gadgets can sit anywhere on your screen in either a minimized or maximized state.

So what were Redmond Pie’s top picks? They chose the following:

Twadget – the Twitter gadget
The Remote Desktop Gadget
The Blue Calendar Gadget (it’s the same calendar gadget as the one included with the OS, just in a nicer color!)
The Windows Live “What’s New” Gadget (see our coverage)
The Simple Search Bar which floats web search boxes on your desktop

They also conveniently bundled all the gadgets into one download available here.

Of course, when we're talking about Windows 7 gadgets, let's not forget the new Windows Media Center Gadget – this one is built right in to the OS. Just right-click on your desktop and select “Gadgets” to add it.

Resume Video in Windows 7 Media Center

Media Center MVP Mike Garcen recently pointed out a great feature in the new and improved Windows 7 Media Center application – video resume. According to Mike, in previous Media Center versions, you could stop the playback of Recorded TV and then later resume the shows where you left off, but regular videos didn’t have the same option. That discrepancy has now been fixed. You can resume the playback of any video (that is, non-DVR-MS or WTV) in Media Center – not just Recorded TV.

To see this feature in action, just add some videos (DivX, Avi, wmv, etc.) into your Windows Media Center Video Library and click on one of the files to start playing it automatically. Then click Stop. Now, go do something else like play another track or even close Media Center entirely. When you return to Media Center and click to play that same video, you will be given the option to either restart or resume playback. How convenient!

This is one of those things that isn’t a huge announcement in and of itself, but just another minor enhancement that, when combined with slews of others like it, make for a better overall computing experience in Windows 7.

Change Your Start Button’s Actions in Windows 7

In Windows Vista, you had to go through a lot of steps to change the default settings for the Windows Start button, but in Windows 7, changing its behavior is easy. If you want to be able to click on “Start” and then choose “Sleep” or “Hiberate” instead of “Shut Down,” (or vice versa) you can make that change right from the Taskbar with very little effort on your part. To make the adjustment, just right-click on the Taskbar and select “Properties.” Then click on the “Start Menu” tab and choose your desired action from the drop-down list provided. Click “OK” and you’re done! A simple change and so incredibly easy – just the way I like it.

How to Make Your Own Theme Pack for Windows 7

You’ve been hearing a lot about themes in Windows 7 lately, haven’t you? It’s probably because everyone and their brother is out there creating new theme packs for you to download.

The latest one comes from Mike Swanson, a talented macro photographer known to his friends as the “desktop wallpaper” man. For people like Mike, theme packs are a great way to showcase their photography. Do you want to make your own theme pack? It’s actually not that hard to do at all.

Components of a Theme Pack

To get you up to speed, a theme pack is a file that contains the following items:

One or more desktop backgrounds
Optional customizations for Aero glass, sounds, screensavers, icons, cursors, etc.

Creating a basic theme is easy – you just customize your desktop the way you want it, then click “Save theme” on the Personalization page in the Control Panel. Just make sure to choose the “theme pack” type in the drop-down list when doing so. That’s really all there is to it.

Getting More Advanced

If you want to edit the themepack file directly or create a file from scratch in a text editor (geek cred goes to you!), you should check out this resource over on MSDN: "Creating and Installing Theme Files." The documentation there provides details on the various sections of a theme file and what sort of syntax should be used.

How to Install & Use Search Connectors in Windows 7

One of the many great new features in Windows 7 is something called Federated Search. As we’ve mentioned before, this new type of search allows you to add “search connectors” that let you perform searches of internet-connected web sites and databases in addition to just searching your local files. It’s a full-on mingling of the web and the machine. Earlier, we pointed you to a link for a zip file of some of Chris Pirillo’s favorite search connectors, and now let’s look at you how you can use them.

First thing’s first – you have to click the above link to download the zip file. If you’re having trouble with the link (it was slow to load for me), you can grab Redmond Pie's pack or the Twitter Search Connector from this site, at the very least.

On the dialog box that appears, just click “Open.” The connector will be installed automatically.

Now – how do you use them? This actually is the easiest part. You can perform searches from within any open Explorer window – just use the search box in the upper-right corner. (You can also start a search from the Start Menu, but here you have to click the “See More Results” link to be taken to an Explorer window where you can begin to use the various connectors.)

Here’s an example of me searching all Twitter posts for the phrase “new Twitter app”:

Notice how my search terms have been highlighted in the results and the results themselves are sorted in chronological order with the newest posts first.

Now if I come across a post I want to see on the web, I simply double-click the entry. That takes me to the actual web page where I can read the original item.

That’s it! Search connectors aren’t uber-geeky or hard to use at all. All you have to do is click and install them when you find someone who has them available for download on the net.

The Bumper List of Windows 7 Secrets

It’s great to see Windows 7 Beta finally released to the world! We're very proud of what has been accomplished over the last months; in many ways, it sets a new quality bar for a beta operating system release. Building on top of the Windows Vista foundation, Windows 7 adds a great deal of polish and refinement to both the user interface and the underlying architecture, while at the same time introducing many new features and improvements that support new hardware, give power users and casual users alike better tools to manage their digital lives, and enable new classes of application experience.

Over future blog entries, I’ll spend time drilling into some of those areas in more detail; of course, there are plenty of articles already out there that dissect Windows 7 in some depth, with the Windows SuperSite and Ars Technica providing notably comprehensive entries. I’d also like to draw particular attention to the series of Windows 7 interviews that Yochay Kiriaty has been posting on Channel 9, which give the inside scoop on the development of many of the most significant new features.

For now, though, I want to focus in on some of “secrets” of Windows 7: the many little tweaks and enhancements that we’ve made in this release that I’ve discovered and collated over the last few months of using Windows 7 across my home and work machines. These are the things that are too small to appear in any marketing document as “features”, but that you quickly miss when you switch to an older version of Windows. There are some who think that we’re arbitrarily hiding functionality to make Windows easy for casual users, but I’d argue that a great deal of effort has been put into this release to satisfy power users. In homage to those of us who enjoy discovering the nooks and crannies of a new operating system list, I’ve put together the longest blog post that I’ve ever written. If you’ve downloaded and installed Windows 7 Beta recently, I think you’ll enjoy this list of my thirty favorite secrets. Have fun!

Windows Management. By now, you’ve probably seen that Windows 7 does a lot to make window management easier: you can “dock” a window to the left or right half of the screen by simply dragging it to the edge; similarly, you can drag the window to the top of the screen to maximize it, and double-click the window top / bottom border to maximize it vertically with the same horizontal width. What you might not know is that all these actions are also available with keyboard shortcuts:
- Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow dock;
- Win+Up Arrow and Win+Down Arrow maximizes and restores / minimizes;
- Win+Shift+Up Arrow and Win+Shift+Down Arrow maximizes and restores the vertical size.
This side-by-side docking feature is particularly invaluable on widescreen monitors – it makes the old Windows way of shift-clicking on two items in the taskbar and then using the context menu to arrange them feel really painful.
Display Projection. Had enough of messing around with weird and wonderful OEM display driver utilities to get your notebook display onto an external projector? In that case, you’ll be pleased to know that projection is really quick and simple with Windows 7. Just hit Win+P, and you’ll be rewarded by the following pop-up window:

Use the arrow keys (or keep hitting Win+P) to switch to “clone”, “extend” or “external only” display settings. You can also access the application as displayswitch.exe.

If you want broader control over presentation settings, you can also press Win+X to open the Windows Mobility Center, which allows you to turn on a presentation “mode” that switches IM clients to do not disturb, disables screensavers, sets a neutral wallpaper etc. (Note that this feature is also available in Windows Vista.)
Cut Out The Clutter. Working on a document in a window and want to get rid of all the extraneous background noise? Simply hit Win+Home to minimize all the non-active background windows, keeping the window you’re using in its current position. When you’re ready, simply press Win+Home again to restore the background windows to their original locations.
Multi-Monitor Windows Management. The earlier tip on window management showed how you can dock windows within a monitor. One refinement of those shortcuts is that you can use Win+Shift+Left Arrow and Win+Shift+Right Arrow to move windows from one monitor to another – keeping them in the same relative location to the monitor’s top-left origin.
Command Junkies Only. One of the most popular power toys in Windows XP was “Open Command Prompt Here”, which enabled you to use the graphical shell to browse around the file system and then use the context menu to open a command prompt at the current working directory. In Windows 7 (and in Windows Vista, incidentally – although not many folk knew about it), you can simply hold the Shift key down while selecting the context menu to get exactly the same effect. If the current working directory is a network location, it will automatically map a drive letter for you.
It’s a Global Village. If you’ve tried to change your desktop wallpaper, you’ve probably noticed that there’s a set of wallpapers there that match the locale you selected when you installed Windows. (If you picked US, you’ll see beautiful views of Crater Lake in Oregon, the Arches National Park, a beach in Hawai’i, etc.) In fact, there are several sets of themed wallpapers installed based on the language you choose, but the others are in a hidden directory. If you’re feeling in an international mood, simply browse to C:\Windows\Globalization\MCT and you’ll see a series of pictures under the Wallpaper directory for each country. Just double-click on the theme file in the Theme directory to display a rotation through all the pictures for that country. (Note that some countries contain a generic set of placeholder art for now.)
The Black Box Recorder. Every developer wishes there was a way that an end-users could quickly and simply record a repro for the problem that they’re running into that is unique to their machine. Windows 7 comes to the rescue! Part of the in-built diagnostic tools that we use internally to send feedback on the product, the Problem Steps Recorder provides a simple screen capture tool that enables you to record a series of actions. Once you hit “record”, it tracks your mouse and keyboard and captures screenshots with any comments you choose to associate alongside them. Once you stop recording, it saves the whole thing to a ZIP file, containing an HTML-based “slide show” of the steps. It’s a really neat little tool and I can’t wait for it to become ubiquitous on every desktop! The program is called psr.exe; you can also search for it from Control Panel under “Record steps to reproduce a problem”.
The Font of All Knowledge. Long Zheng will be happy: we’ve got rid of the Add Fonts dialog that has served Windows faithfully for the last twenty years. (Of course, for most of that time, it’s been deprecated – the easy way to install a set of fonts has simply been to drag them into the Fonts folder via Control Panel.) But now font installation is really easy – we’ve added an “Install” button to the font viewer applet that takes care of the installation process:

There are lots of other new features built into Windows 7 that will satisfy those of a typographic bent, incidentally – grouping multiple weights together, the ability to hide fonts based on regional settings, a new text rendering engine built into the DirectWrite API, and support in the Font common file dialog for more than the four “standard” weights. For example:
Gabriola. As well as the other typographic features mentioned above, Windows 7 includes Gabriola, an elaborate display type from the Tiro Typeworks foundry that takes advantage of OpenType Layout to provide a variety of stylistic sets, flourishes and ornamentation ligatures:
Who Stole My Browser? If you feel like Internet Explorer is taking a long time to load your page, it’s worth taking a look at the add-ons you have installed. One of the more helpful little additions in Internet Explorer 8 is instrumentation for add-on initialization, allowing you to quickly see whether you’re sitting around waiting for plug-ins to load. Just click Tools / Manage Add-ons, and then scroll right in the list view to see the load time. On my machine, I noticed that the Research add-on that Office 2007 installs was a particular culprit, and since I never use it, it was simple to disable it from the same dialog box.
Rearranging the Furniture. Unless you’ve seen it demonstrated, you may not know that the icons in the new taskbar aren’t fixed in-place. You can reorder them to suit your needs, whether they’re pinned shortcuts or running applications. What’s particularly nice is that once they’re reordered, you can start a new instance of any of the first five icons by pressing Win+1, Win+2, Win+3 etc. I love that I can quickly fire up a Notepad2 instance on my machine with a simple Win+5 keystroke, for instance.

What’s less well-known is that you can similarly drag the system tray icons around to rearrange their order, or move them in and out of the hidden icon list. It’s an easy way to customize your system to show the things you want, where you want them.
Installing from a USB Memory Stick. My wife has a Samsung NC10 netbook (very nice machine, by the way), and we wanted to install Windows 7 Beta on this machine to replace the pre-installed Windows XP environment. Like most netbook-class devices, this machine has no built-in media drive, and nor did I have an external USB DVD drive available to boot off. The solution: I took a spare 4GB USB 2.0 thumbdrive, reformatted it as FAT32, and simply copied the contents of the Windows 7 Beta ISO image to the memory stick using xcopy e:\ f:\ /e /f (where e: was the DVD drive and f: was the removable drive location). Not only was it easy to boot and install from the thumbdrive, it was also blindingly fast: quicker than the corresponding DVD install on my desktop machine.

It’s also worth noting in passing that Windows 7 is far better suited to a netbook than any previous operating system: it has a much lighter hard drive and memory footprint than Windows Vista, while also being able to optimize for solid state drives (for example, it switches off disk defragmentation since random read access is as fast as sequential read access, and it handles file deletions differently to minimize wear on the solid state drive).
I Want My Quick Launch Toolbar Back! You might have noticed that the old faithful Quick Launch toolbar is not only disabled by default in Windows 7, it’s actually missing from the list of toolbars. As is probably obvious, the concept of having a set of pinned shortcut icons is now integrated directly into the new taskbar. Based on early user interface testing, we think that the vast majority of users out there (i.e. not the kind of folk who read this blog, with the exception of my mother) will be quite happy with the new model, but if you’re after the retro behavior, you’ll be pleased to know that the old shortcuts are all still there. To re-enable it, do the following:
- Right-click the taskbar, choose Toolbars / New Toolbar
- In the folder selection dialog, enter the following string and hit OK:
  %userprofile%\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch
- Turn off the “lock the taskbar” setting, and right-click on the divider. Make sure that “Show text” and “Show title” are disabled and the view is set to “small icons”.
- Use the dividers to rearrange the toolbar ordering to choice, and then lock the taskbar again.
If it’s not obvious by the semi-tortuous steps above, it’s worth noting that this isn’t something we’re exactly desperate for folks to re-enable, but it’s there if you really need it for some reason. Incidentally, we’d love you to really try the new model first and give us feedback on why you felt the new taskbar didn’t suit your needs.
It’s a Drag. Much play has been made of the Jump Lists feature in Windows 7, allowing applications like Windows Live Messenger to offer an easy task-based entry point. Jump lists replace the default right-click context menu in the new taskbar; another way to access them (particularly useful if you’re running Windows 7 on a one-button MacBook) is by left-clicking and dragging up in a kind of “swooshing” motion. This was designed for touch-enabled devices like the beautiful HP TouchSmart all-in-one PC, where the same gesture applies.

Another place where you can “swoosh” (not an official Microsoft term) is the IE 8 address bar, where the downward drag gesture brings up an expanded list containing the browser history, favorites and similar entries. The slower you drag, the cooler the animation!
Standards Support. Every review of Windows 7 that I’ve seen has noted the revamped WordPad and Paint applets that add an Office-like ribbon to expose their functionality. Few, however, have noticed one small but hopefully appreciated feature: WordPad can now read and write both the Word 2007-compatible Office Open XML file format but also the OpenDocument specification that IBM and Sun have been advocating:
Windows Vista-Style Taskbar. I wasn’t initially a fan of the Windows 7 taskbar when it was first introduced in early Windows 7 builds, but as the design was refined in the run up to the beta, I was converted and now actively prefer the new look, particularly when I’ve got lots of windows open simultaneously. For those who really would prefer a look more reminiscent of Windows Vista, the good news is that it’s easy to customize the look of the taskbar to more closely mirror the old version:

To achieve this look, right-click on the taskbar and choose the properties dialog. Select the “small icons” checkbox and under the “taskbar buttons” setting, choose “combine when taskbar is full”. It’s not pixel-perfect in accuracy, but it’s close from a functionality point of view.
Peeking at the Desktop. While we’re on the taskbar, it’s worth noting a few subtleties. You’ve probably seen the small rectangle in the bottom right hand corner: this is the feature we call “Aero Peek”, which enables you to see any gadgets or icons you’ve got on your desktop. I wanted to note that there’s a keyboard shortcut that does the same thing – just press Win+Space.
Running with Elevated Rights. Want to quickly launch a taskbar-docked application as an administrator? It’s easy – hold down Ctrl+Shift while you click on the icon, and you’ll immediately launch it with full administrative rights (assuming your account has the necessary permissions, of course!)
One More of the Same, Please. I’ve seen a few folk caught out by this one. If you’ve already got an application open on your desktop (for example, a command prompt window), and you want to open a second instance of the same application, you don’t have to go back to the start menu. You can simply hold down the Shift key while clicking on the taskbar icon, and it will open a new instance of the application rather than switching to the existing application. For a keyboard-free shortcut, you can middle-click with the third mouse button to do the same thing. (This trick assumes that your application supports multiple running instances, naturally.)
Specialized Windows Switching. Another feature that power users will love is the ability to do a kind of “Alt+Tab” switching across windows that belong to just one application. For example, if you’ve got five Outlook message windows open along with ten other windows, you can quickly tab through just the Outlook windows by holding down the Ctrl key while you repeatedly click on the single Outlook icon. This will toggle through each of the five Outlook windows in order, and is way faster than opening Alt+Tab and trying to figure out which of the tiny thumbnail images relates to the specific message you’re trying to find.
Walking Through the Taskbar. Another “secret” Windows shortcut: press Win+T to move the focus to the taskbar. Once you’re there, you can use the arrow keys to select a particular window or group and then hit Enter to launch or activate it. As ever, you can cancel out of this mode by hitting the Esc key. I don’t know for sure, but I presume this shortcut was introduced for those with accessibility needs. However, it’s equally valuable to power users – another good reason for all developers to care about ensuring their code is accessible.
The Widescreen Tip. Almost every display sold these days is widescreen, whether you’re buying a notebook computer or a monitor. While it might be great for watching DVDs, when you’re trying to get work done it can sometimes feel like you’re a little squeezed for vertical space.

As a result, the first thing I do when I set up any new computer is to dock the taskbar to the left hand side of the screen. I can understand why we don’t set this by default – can you imagine the complaints from enterprise IT departments who have to retrain all their staff – but there’s no reason why you as a power user should have to suffer from default settings introduced when the average screen resolution was 800x600.

In the past, Windows did an indifferent job of supporting “side dockers” like myself. Sure, you could move the taskbar, but it felt like an afterthought – the gradients would be wrong, the Start menu had a few idiosyncrasies, and you’d feel like something of a second-class citizen. The Windows 7 taskbar feels almost as if it was designed with vertical mode as the default – the icons work well on the side of the screen, shortcuts like the Win+T trick mentioned previously automatically switch from left/right arrows to up/down arrows, and so on. The net effect is that you wind up with a much better proportioned working space.

Try it – in particular, if you’ve got a netbook computer that has a 1024x600 display, you’ll immediately appreciate the extra space for browsing the Internet. For the first day you’ll feel a little out of sync, but then I guarantee you’ll become an enthusiastic convert!
Pin Your Favorite Folders. If you’re always working in the same four or five folders, you can quickly pin them with the Explorer icon on the taskbar. Hold the right-click button down and drag the folder to the taskbar, and it will be automatically pinned in the Explorer Jump List.
Starting Explorer from “My Computer”. If you spend more time manipulating files outside of the documents folders than inside, you might want to change the default starting directory for Windows Explorer so that it opens at the Computer node:

To do this, navigate to Windows Explorer in the Start Menu (it’s in the Accessories folder). Then edit the properties and change the target to read:

If you want the change to affect the icon on the taskbar, you’ll need to unpin and repin it to the taskbar so that the new shortcut takes affect. It’s worth noting that Win+E will continue to display the documents library as the default view: I’ve not found a way to change this from the shell at this time.
ClearType Text Tuning and Display Color Calibration. If you want to tune up your display for image or text display, we have the tools included out of the box. It’s amazing what a difference this makes: by slightly darkening the color of the text and adjusting the gamma back a little, my laptop display looks much crisper than it did before. You’d adjust the brightness and contrast settings on that fancy 42” HDTV you’ve just bought: why wouldn’t you do the same for the computer displays that you stare at every day?

Check out cttune.exe and dccw.exe respectively, or run the applets from Control Panel.
ISO Burning. Easy to miss if you’re not looking for it: you can double-click on any DVD or CD .ISO image and you’ll see a helpful little applet that will enable you to burn the image to a blank disc. No more grappling for shareware utilities of questionable parentage!
Windows Movie Maker. Windows 7 doesn’t include a movie editing tool – it’s been moved to the Windows Live Essentials package, along with Photo Gallery, Mail and Messenger. Unfortunately, Windows Live Movie Maker is currently still in an early beta that is missing most of the old feature set (we’re reworking the application), and so you might be feeling a little bereft of options. It goes without saying that we intend to have a better solution by the time we ship Windows 7, but in the meantime the best solution for us early adopters is to use Windows Movie Maker 2.6 (which is essentially the same as the most recent update to the Windows XP version). It’s missing the full set of effects and transitions from the Windows Vista version, and doesn’t support HD editing, but it’s pretty functional for the typical usage scenario of home movie editing.

Hiding the Windows Live Messenger Icon. Hopefully your first act after Windows 7 setup completed was to download and install the Windows Live Essentials suite of applications (if not, then you’re missing out on a significant part of the Windows experience). If you’re a heavy user of IM, you may love the way that Windows Live Messenger is front and central on the taskbar, where you can easily change status and quickly send an IM to someone:

On the other hand, you may prefer to keep Windows Live Messenger in the system tray where it’s been for previous releases. If so, you can fool the application into the old style of behavior. To do this, close Windows Live Messenger, edit the shortcut properties and set the application to run in Windows Vista compatibility mode. Bingo!
Enjoy The Fish. I’m surprised that not many people seem to have caught the subtle joke with the Siamese fighting fish that is part of the default background, so I’ll do my part at keeping the secret hidden. Check out wikipedia for a clue.
When All Else Fails… There are always those times when you’re in a really bad spot – you can’t boot up properly, and what you really want is something you can quickly use to get at a command prompt so you can properly troubleshoot. Windows 7 now includes the ability to create a system repair disc, which is essentially a CD-bootable version of Windows that just includes the command prompt and a suite of system tools. Just type “system repair disc” in the Start Menu search box, and you’ll be led to the utility.

Windows 7 Calculator to Vista

Windows 7 will most likely offer users a pleasant surprise, at least through its redefined interface and the set of redesigned tools it brings. The plain old calculator suffered a beautiful transformation into a more consumer-oriented product capable of serving both more science prone users as well as the average Joe.

As you probably know, the application can be downloaded as a standalone product here, and run from portable devices with no problem at all, as it requires no installation; a double click on the executable will suffice to launch it. It works nicely on Vista but I bet that you’d appreciate complete integration in the operating system so that it would be automatically launched instead of the plain old version of Windows Calculator.

The procedure is actually a matter of gaining full control of the much dreaded, vital file keeper, System32 folder. Normally, you do not have access to modifying the data in it, not even if you run your account in administrator mode or become the administrator by running the command net user administrator /active:Yes in Command Prompt.

But there are plenty of workarounds to this and besides running Take Ownership registry tweaks, or using third-party software such as Unlocker to cut off all the strings to a file and be able to bend it your way, there is also a very easy but pretty dangerous solution. It is a matter of security permission that can be fixed from the Properties of the System32 folder.

So get into System32’s properties and access the Security tab. Next click on “Advanced” button in the lower part of the window. Right now you should be in Permissions tab that lists all permission entries and you can safely click on the Edit button. Another Permissions window pops up listing once more the permission entries. Here’s where you get to select the desired user you want to grant full control over System32 folder and edit the security approvals. Simply check the Full control checkbox to gain complete power over the folder. OK everything and that is it.

If all this seems like mumbo jumbo to you and it is too difficult to understand, I’ll translate it for you, with the help of these easy to follow steps:

Select folder > right click > Properties > Security tab > click Advanced > click Edit > select desired user > click Edit > check Full control box > OK > OK > OK > OK

- you will have to wait for a while for the new permissions to be set.

Now that full control over the System32 folder is in your hands, it is time to replace the old Windows Calculator with the fresh Windows 7 one. In my case I made a backup copy of the old app by adding an underscore (”_”) suffix to its name, just in case.

The original files that need to be replaced are calc.exe located in the root of System32 and calc.exe.mui in the “en-US” folder of System32. As mentioned before, I made backups to these, just in case, and I recommend you do the same. If you do this, all it takes to finish the process is copying the files in Windows 7 Calculator archive in the exact places with the original ones.

If all the steps have been followed correctly, Windows 7 Calculator should be the default calculator for your system. And if you took my advice and renamed the original files, you will have access to the old calculator as well by typing the new given name in the Run box (in my case calc_).

Once all this is done I suggest you remove the full control so that no unfortunate accidents take place because System32 is a very sensitive folder for the system. If you can’t remember the previous permissions, in my case they were limited to Traverse folder / execute file, List folder / read data, Read attributes, Read extended attributes and Read permissions. As you probably notice there is no write permission granted so this should be enough hint for you not to mess around with the data.
